Dates, Times & Fees
This course will give you the skills necessary to identify mushrooms and fungi in a range of habitats.
You will learn to identify the main edible species as well as many that are not, and understand the habits, ecology and behaviour of this mysterious genus.
You will also learn the potential for the use of fungi in horticultural systems, micro-waste management and other unexplored areas.
You will also learn cultivation techniques.
This course will guide you through fungi identification. It will explore the main species through walks and forays. You will learn what you can expect to find in different habitats, the main differences between families, and how to easily spot edible mushrooms.
The second aspect of the course will examine various cultivation techniques of edible mushrooms and the role of mycelium in permiculture. The use of mycelium for dealing with hazardous waste and polluted soil will also be discussed with particular reference to the research work undertaken here at the Centre for Alternative Technology.
The course will take place in the diverse habitats around the Centre for Alternative Technology. This course will make use of our new woodland Coed Gwern and our new laboratory facilities and teaching space.
The course is for anyone interested in cultivating or foraging for mushrooms.
This course will be taught by Dr. John Kearney – Senior lecturer on CATs Advanced Energy and Environment MSc, Botanist and Mycologist.
Due to the nature of this course some practical work will be done outside. We strongly advise you to bring waterproof clothing and steel toe-cap boots are mandatory.
