Who is the course for?

Renewable Energy Systems looks at the breadth of technologies available to harness energy from wind, water, solar and biomass, as well as the use of heat pumps.

This course is suitable for professional development or anyone with an interest in getting an overview of renewable technologies.
Also useful for those wishing to know which renewable technology to pursue for their properties, and to find out whether they are receiving the best advice from professionals.

The course delivers a thorough understanding of Renewable Energy Systems through practical and theoretical sessions, with tours of CAT’s extensive on-site renewable systems.
Students learn skills ranging from how to assess a site for wind, to basic plumbing skills for solar hot water panel installation.
Practical and financial considerations will also be discussed.
Practical sessions accompany classroom based learning to make this overview of Renewable Energy Systems dynamic and diverse.

Whilst looking at all renewable energy systems in detail the course will help to answer some interesting questions…
• Which renewable energy system is most suitable for my site?
• What about the ‘other renewable’?
• Why are perpetual machines impossible?

Students can expect to leave the course with a thorough working knowledge of all commonly utilised domestic renewable systems including;
• Which renewable energy systems are most suitable for particular sites.
• Practical considerations for installation and maintenance.

It will also enable students to decide which technology is technically and economically feasible for a given project.

Testimonials include:-
“I found a it a really good overview of all the issues that you will have to take into consideration.”

“I think the balance was right between practical and theory.”
“A really good mix of knowledge and practical experience and really nice delivery.”

Taught by CAT Engineers and specialists including: Dr. Arthur Butler and Adam Tyler.

Arthur is a tutor and lecturer on the REBE MSc course, and lectures and runs practical sessions on wind power on the AEES MSc.
He offers technical advice about experiment design, equipment and datalogging.
He also teaches on a variety of other subjects on short courses at CAT.
Additionally he works in the Engineering department at CAT, with a specialism in system control and monitoring.

Adam is CAT's Renewable's expert.
As one of our engineers and is responsible for all the heating systems on site.
He is responsible for designing, installing, commissioning and maintaining our new Biomass teaching room.
He has a Masters in Engineering from Lancaster University and also completed a MSC in our Renewable Energy in the Built Environment here at CAT.
