Who is the course for?

Get ready for the start of the BBQ season.
The course will cover the theory behind traditional charcoal making. It will then explain the advances in design using retort systems. The making of biochar will be explained and its credibility as an tool for environmental management analysed.

This course is tailored to those interested in making charcoal on a small-scale and/or the principles and applications of charcoal or biochar as a soil improver.

Topics will include charcoal making both traditionally and in a retort system, alternative charcoal making systems to the anilla stove, biochar, the making of biochar and its application in the UK.

Participants will leave the course with an integrated understanding of charcoal making and the role of charcoal and biochar in the context of climate change and sustainability.

The course is run by CAT woodland manager Rob Gooodsell.

Due to the nature of this course some practical work will be done outside.
We strongly advise you to bring waterproof clothing and steel toe-cap boots are mandatory.
If you do not bring them with you, you may not be able to take part in some of the activities.

Fees

Our course fees include VAT, tuition and materials, unless otherwise stated.

Cancellation Policy
We regret that except in cases of illness, we will make the following cancellation charges:
a) more than two weeks before the course - half the fee forfeit.
b) less than two weeks before the course - the full fee forfeit.

However, the Centre reserves the right to cancel any courses, deposits and fees will be returned in full should this happen.
