Course details

You must have attended the introductory 3 days (either the previous three days or last year’s three day introductory course) to attend the Going Deeper days.

Recent years have seen a surge in popular interest in rewilding, fantastic for landscape scale conservation for a multitude of reasons. This course gives an introduction and broad overview of the basic principles and practices of rewilding and ecological restoration, to enable you to understand how these might be applied in your own context.

Whether you are a current or soon-to-be landowner, employed in the conservation sector or want to join with others in your community to rewild land or campaign for the rewilding of public/common land, this course will help you to get a grasp of where to start, and what challenges you may face.

After the popularity of last year’s course, we are extending this course by two days to cover more in depth material as a follow-on for people who have attended the introductory three days (either the previous three days or last year’s three day introductory course).

The introductory days (Fri, Sat, Sun) will cover:

· What is rewilding, and why is it necessary?

· Key concepts and issues such as succession, ecological drivers (vegetation, herbivores, carnivores etc), restoration, policy and governance.

· Basic land management - livestock and grazing, fencing, regulations, common challenges.

· Case studies, with local site visits – what’s worked/not worked on the ground.

· Broader social aspects - community engagement, conflict, rural employment, human’s disconnected relationship with nature.

· Practical exercises – opportunity mapping, reconnecting with nature, action planning.

The follow-on days (Mon, Tues) will cover:

Broader spatial aspects - mapping, connectivity and scale.
Funding - how to make it pay.
Governance and land ownership models.
Relevant policy and legislation.
Species reintroductions - community consultation, ecological/legislative considerations.
Practical sessions and field visits - TBC, but may include activities such as tree propagation, bog restoration, monitoring released pine martens.

The tutors for this course will be Mick Green, Steve Carver, David Bavin and Kara Moses.
