Introduction to Herbal Medicine – a season of 5 courses over 1 year.

Your tutor for this course is Amanda Dean.

Each day will stand alone, but all 5 will add up to give a practical, hands on introduction for the lay herbalist with an opportunity to work with an experienced medical herbalist to build on your skills and knowledge.

Who this course is for: It’s for you if you are interested in herbs and want to build your confidence using them effectively to promote and maintain your own and your family’s health. This course will be suitable for you whether you are already using herbs or not.

What you will learn over the 5 days:

• Getting started with herbal medicine – safety, sustainability, plant identification and a tried and tested range of herbs for common ailments.
• How to gather, store and prepare your own herbal remedies to make sure they are of high quality and efficacy.
• How to make infusions, decoctions, tinctures, ointments and poultices.
• Practical sessions making herbal remedies
• Herb walks around the site, getting to know some of the plants both cultivated and wild at CAT, a site of exceptional biodiversity.
• How to use herbs in practice – choosing which herbs to use and dosage considerations.
• A different therapeutic focus for each day in the course: an introduction to herbal medicine; herbs and strategies for immunity and winter wellness; stress and resilience; digestion and finally, first aid.

Why you need to do this course: Gain confidence, learn tried and tested remedies, working alongside an experienced medical herbalist, get hands-on practical experience, identify herbs in their habitat at CAT which is an exceptional site for biodiversity.

Session 5: 28th April 2018
Spring Tonics and Digestive Health.


Traditionally this was the time of year when people used spring tonics like nettle, cleavers and yellow dock to revitalise the body after a long winter of stored foods and little fresh produce.
Although most of us are no longer dependent on stored foods in the winter, modern lifestyles, diets and medicines can have a great impact on our digestive health. Spring tonics, along with bitter foods and medicines, are still very useful for re-vitalising a sluggish system. An irritated and unhappy digestive system can also be soothed and healed by simple herbal remedies and brought back into balance.
We’ll cover a range of herbs and strategies for promoting digestive health and learn ways to combat the effects of modern lifestyles on digestive function.
During the day we will go out around the site at CAT to forage for wild greens and herbal spring tonic remedies.
We’ll learn about the benefits of herbal bitters and gut-healing teas and you will blend your own bitter digestive tonic to take home. Digestive health is the foundation of our vitality!

Things you need to know


Due to the nature of this course some practical work will be done outside. We strongly advise you to bring waterproof clothing.

You must be over the age of 18 years when this course starts.
