Course details

This is the second part of the introductory module to CAT’s new degree Sustainability in Energy Provision and Demand Management and focusses on Energy generation, supply and demand in cities.

For this course you will be joining a module of CAT’s new MSc in Sustainability in Energy Provision and Demand Management.

Within the context of increasing global-scale urbanisation and climate change, this module will examine the challenges of ensuring sustainable energy use and management, an environmentally sustainable energy supply to, and within, urban areas, and the use of this energy.

It will explore technical economic and social dynamics that underlie the development and management of communities and cities, and examine renewable and low carbon energy technologies which are particularly relevant in cities, including combined heat and power, biomass, heat pumps, solar thermal and district heating.

Specifically, the course will explore:
• Energy (heat and power) current and projected in domestic and commercial buildings and in transport
• Environmental impacts, sustainability and adaptation issues,
• Policy planning economic and social and behavioural aspects of the urban environment,
• Efficiency or demand reduction opportunities,
• Supply opportunities including from CHP, biomass, heat pumps, solar thermal etc.
• Specific phenomena of cities (e.g. Urban Heat Island, cooling needs, fuel poverty and equity issues, urban regeneration and transformation).

The week includes a lecture on nature connection theory and supported daily practice, exploring the role of our relationship with the natural world in sustainability and adaptation as well as a tool for personal resilience in dealing with ‘wicked problems’ like climate change.

This course is developed and led by tutors from CAT’s Graduate School of the Environment.
