Course details

This course is designed for anyone that is thinking of building their own home, out-house or even extend your own house using natural materials.

The course focuses on practical demonstrations and hands-on work.

We will be doing Groundworks and Foundations and then building a small section of a building with a wall height of approximately 1m.

The building will comprise of sections built using:-

• Timber Framing
• Strawbale
• Hempcrete
• Cob

We will also be exploring the use of Clay and Earth including Rammed Earth.

After we have built the main structure we will make a section of roofing for the building by fixing pre-cut rafters, felt and batons and slate a small area.

The course is very hands-on and practical based, backed up with lectures (sometimes in the evening).

Students will gain practical experience, understand how to combine the various natural materials in their own build.

The course is designed to be suitable for all abilities as you don’t have to have any skills.

Unfortunately we’re not going to turn you into a master craftsman (as this takes years of practice), but you will get the feel of the materials and understand where they should be used and see the possibilities of using the various natural materials.

After the course you may possibly only choose one material in your build, but you will have seen the possibilities of using the various natural materials.

Your main tutor is Carwyn Lloyd Jones (Master craftsman) who also runs our Build a Tiny House course here at CAT as featured in The Guardian.

Things you need to know
