Course details

Join us for a week of Lime Rendering with Bee Rowan where you will learn everything you need to know about lime plaster and render for applying to the walls of your own project - whether that's to your own house walls, inside or out, onto different surfaces, or whether it's rendering onto a straw bale structure, which we'll be doing this week.

We'll be combining practical work on a real house build with illustrated theory sessions and demonstrations, so you'll be able to make informed decisions and have the confidence and support to take on your own project.

We'll also be given a guided tour of CAT's lime slaking tanks and of one of the very few remaining working lime kilns left in the UK. Instruction and practical sessions will be held on how to select the right kind of lime for your job,- even for those jobs that have to deal with heavy wet weather or flood), and how to source the lime - either through recommended suppliers or through mixing your own durable, permeable, crack-free and robust mixes.

It's entirely true that 'it's all in the preparation' so we'll make sure you know how to prepare the walls, the lime mixes for the different coats, and if a strawbale building, how to prepare and shape your bale surface, shape the reveals around windows and doors, when to use air tightness tape, how to chase the walls for electrical cabling, how to prepare your materials and the tools and the equipment you will need for the job. No expensive specialist tools required.

You'll learn how to apply first coats, dubbing out mixes, body coats, mesh and what kind, and finally how to choose and apply the right finish coat for your project including how to make and colour lime wash, and we'll make sure you understand the ongoing maintenance considerations of the various options.

We'll also learn of the role of lime in stabilising local soil and how anyone can make flood resilient renders or mortars for flood-vulnerable areas (based on the disaster resilience work with lime stabilised soil our tutor is doing in flood zones).

Also, if you have any of these please do bring them with you, if not we'll supply them: steel toe capped work boots (£3 to hire from CAT for the week); work gloves; heavy duty rubber gloves (like HD marigolds); Eye protection glasses or goggles; overalls.

Book early to avoid disappointment.
