Course details

Your highly experienced instructor Tom will demonstrate and offer step by step professional guidance on building with different types of stone.

The two types of material we will be focusing on are the off cuts of slate found at quarries all over Wales such as the one at CAT. This type of slate is a by-product and is often inexpensive to buy. It is useful for creating very uniform, almost brick like sharp finishes seen on roadsides, landscaping projects, garden planters and ponds. You might have also seen it used in the building of houses and barns, exteriors and interiors such as fireplaces (though often, but not always in these cases used with a little bit of mortar for binding).

The other stone we will be using is a granite like natural stone, though more porous and gritty than the usual blue granite. This is commonly used in farm boundaries in South Snowdonia, as well as roadside walls and retaining walls. It holds together well and so lends itself to more creative forms like a roundhouse style Irish Beehive hut as well as everyday dry stone walling projects.

Although it can take many years of practice to perfect this ancient craft, by learning the basic rules such as how to grade, place and stabilize chosen stones safely with care and attention to detail, you’ll quickly grasp the foundation knowledge and skill.

From there you’ll be able to go on and create satisfying and durable structures that are not only practical and beautiful to look at, but also an invaluable habitat for many plants, animals, birds and reptiles.

Many people who go on to learn more detailed techniques and skills also choose to make a living out of dry stone walling which can be as lucrative as it is pleasurable.
