Course details

The aim of the short course is to learn how to build stable bottle walls with cob. Other waste materials will also be introduced in foundation and roofing stages.

Why make building blocks from plastic?

Plastic has been useful as packaging, but this has to stop. To save it going into landfill we need to get creative, as when plastic is in the wrong place, it is toxic to life.

Stuffing plastic into bottles contains it, and creates a building material, recently named an Ecobrick.

When this is built into walls with cob, it keeps plastic out of the environment and creates a strong insulated building that can be disassembled and reused. Locked into the plaster, the plastic does not cause a problem; in regard to waste, or carbon in the atmosphere due to degradation. By reducing the surface area of plastic in the environment, this reduces the quantity of plastic entering the food chain.

The process of making bricks in this way raises awareness of the issue and offers a solution, for the present.

Your course leader is Lizzie Wynn (MSc SABE) from Off the Wall Wales
