Course details

The aim of this short course is to introduce you to the technique of felt making a hollow form, such as a case or a small bag which is both attractive and functional. We will be using merino wool tops in a range of colours. Both experienced felters and beginners are welcome and will be catered for.

Your tutor for this course is Andrea Smith.

Day 1 – Saturday
Engaging with the wool tops, laying and handling the fibres, colour matching and using water and olive oil soap and a resist to stop the layers felting together to form a seamless 3d item. Designs will be your own and basic to accommodate beginners, although there will be room and materials for more experienced learners. Please note that we will be rolling the fibres using a rolling pin which requires a good level of upper body strength which can be maintained. Those learners who have difficulties with this are welcome to make a less demanding piece. We will leave our pieces to dry overnight.

Day 2 – Sunday
This day will be spent exploring the decoration of our pieces using dry or needle felting tools. 3D designs can be made using the needle felting techniques and be added to your felted piece or directly onto it. Discussion will be encouraged regarding tools, fibres, techniques and further learning throughout the course. There will be a few materials and tools to purchase.

Outcomes -
You'll take away your piece along with the knowledge of the techniques, materials and tools you'll create your own projects, be that slippers, hats, bags, clothes, the potential is only limited by your imagination!

Food and board are also available at CAT to fit around your travel plans. Make a weekend of it and immerse yourself in CAT with free access to the visitor centre. B&B in our award winning WISE building is available from just £40/night.
