Course details

A three day workshop at which students will create a simple relief in stone using traditional hand carving techniques under the guidance of professional sculptor, Glenn Morris. Drawing inspiration from the natural environment of C.A.T., students will be introduced to the basic skills and tools of the craft of the stone carver.
This course is perfect for the beginner or those with a little experience who would like to explore this wonderful medium further.

All tools and materials will be provided.

The course tutor will be Glenn Morris, a professional sculptor from Mid Wales. Glenn has a particular interest in the environment and the fragility of the natural world. He will be working closely with students to ensure that they have an extremely productive and rewarding time.

Day 1.
Students will be shown the various tools used in the craft of stone carving and be introduced to their use and techniques. By the end of the day students will have become familiar with simple carving techniques, use of mallets and chisels as well as associated tools such as rifflers etc. and will have a good knowledge of ancillary required for working in stone. Personal protective equipment and safety considerations will also be covered.

The group will take a short walk around C.A.T. to look for source material (students may wish to bring their own sketches or ideas also) The purpose of the walk will be to look for inspiration and ideas from which to begin the carving. The carving will be in the form of a simple relief and design and application will be discussed and considered.

Day 2.
Carving will be the main activity for the whole day and the tutor will move from student to student to help them achieve their aims and objectives whilst introducing more advanced techniques in a manner that works on an individual basis.
There will be short breaks in which students will be shown methods of working as a group and during which ideas helpful to all can be demonstrated.

Day 3.
The bulk of the day will be spent carving with a view to completion or, where this is not feasible, discussions of how the student can continue to work on the piece following the course with any tips needed to facilitate this successfully.

Near the end of the day students will have the opportunity to discuss each other’s work and reflect on techniques and outcomes…. usually great fun!
